Kamandi #7, July 1973

Been in a real slump lately. Thought I'd try to light the old fire, and go back to the "Source" ... Jack Kirby.

Recently caught an episode of The Brave and the Bold with Batman and none other than Kamandi ... The Last Boy On Earth! Kamandi has always been one of my favorite Kirby comics, and had a pretty good run over at DC in the early 70's. Imagine Kirby doing Planet of the Apes, but with all the animals in this future Earth talking, walking, thinking, and feuding. Fun, imaginative, wild stuff! Some great stories too.

Anyhoo, the Batman / Kamandi episode was shocked full of Kirby goodness. I recognized a giant gorilla named "Tiny", and had to sift through the basement and find this gem. In this issue Kirby does "King Kong" his way.

Kirby is known for his amazing full page and double page splashes, and at this point in time he was filling his books with multiple splash pages. Usually as "Chapters" in the comic, which could last for a couple pages or half the book.

p.s. Found part of the T.V. episode here, which also has Mr. Miracle (another favorite) in the beginning.

Comic-Con 2007 has come and gone, and it was just as huge as last year (if not huger!). Big thanks to everyone who stopped by to say hi, pick up items, and chat a while. All your positive feedback made the trip worth while, and continues to support the direction in which my work is growing.

After 9 years of animating cereal commercials, I've moved on to a new job .....

For the past three months I've been learning a whole new career as a toy designer, for a place which creates toys for a major fast food chain throughout the world. I won't be specific ... but think golden arches and green shakes on St. Patrick's day. While I've been soaking in all the new info, I've neglected my personal doodles ....

.... So here's a little scribble for a toy that you will most definitely not be seeing anytime soon ;)

It's been nearly a month since my last post .... ouch .... but this cold Chicago weather has got me in hibernation mode.

Some more background paintings for the animated short. These will have a screen time of only about 2-3 seconds, so you'll barely see 'em. But they were sure fun to work on. It now looks like things may wrap up in late winter, early spring, because the studio is busy with commercial work for the holidays.

These are some background pieces for an animated short a studio in Chicago is producing. The short is finally within view of being completed, and if all goes well, may be finished by the end of the year. That's all I can say for now, but will be posting some more soon ...... :)

Devil Man

Recent commission of Go Nagai's classic manga/anime character from the 70's.

Interestingly enough, Nagai's work has always been an influence, but it wasn't until very recent that I discovered who the creator behind the work was. He's responsible for such classics as Devil Man, Cutey Honey, Kekko Kamen, but probably best known for his work on Mazinger Z and Getter Robo. These last two were part of the giant robot craze which invaded the U.S. in the 70's and 80's, and were better known as members of the Shogun Warriors* toy line.

For me, Nagai is one of the rare artists who can combine adult themes, humor, and cool monsters all in one. If you dig old school anime, I recommend hunting down some of his 70's Japanese t.v. shows on e-bay. Good stuff!
